The thought of freezing hockey pucks before a game sounds absolutely crazy, but it’s actually quite common. Why do they freeze hockey pucks?
When you see a hockey game being played, the pucks are most likely frozen before they go into play. This is to make sure that when it’s released from its enclosure for an instant burst of speed during gameplay there won’t be any bounces and ultimately increase player control. In general, the top-tier leagues are where you’ll find pucks that have been frozen beforehand. In cases like this, it’s because of how much effort goes into making every game run smoothly for players and officials alike – which means no matter what level your hockey gear at home is on ice or field levels there won’t be any different.
Why freeze pucks?
Hockey pucks are frozen to make them slicker and reduce the bounce. Puck is made from vulcanized rubber which makes it more likely for your stick to hit in order not to be turned away or rolled off course by an opponent’s attempt at stopping you with their own flick of wrist The colder they get, though-the less chance that this will happen.
Pro players are used to dealing with rolling pucks, but it makes their plays riskier. Freezing the puck beforehand can help prevent unpredictable movements during a game which is beneficial for all involved parties – especially if you’re playing against someone who doesn’t have this skill.
Rubber is bouncy
Rubber is a very elastic material. When it’s stretched, 50% of its original length will return to be after the force has been applied. Pucks are made from vulcanized rubber – a process that involves using sulfur to make it hard and last much longer. They’re still bouncy though! (Coincidentally, the color of this material changes when you heat-proofed which makes them perfect for hockey). It is now common practice to freeze pucks before any official game, as it has been discovered that freeing rubber hardens and reduces its elasticity.
How do they freeze pucks?
The hockey season starts with the purchase of 1,500 pucks from InglasCo – made by official suppliers to top-level teams. The home team is responsible for keeping their game pucks frozen, but some teams use portable ice cream freezers to do so. They’ll keep this puck on ice until the time of play with a few NHL players reportedly using refrigerated mobile coolers (NHL rules state that the visiting squad must have one if they’re playing at an outdoor venue). The pucks are kept between 14-20°F (-10 / -6°C) before being put into play.
How many pucks do they need?
When it’s time for them to play, the fans will use up 25-30 pucks during an average game. The players often fly over or are given some of these cool hockey puck things at halftime so they can give them back after thanks. At first glance, you might think that this sounds like quite a lot but trust us when we say -it isn’t as bad since there’s always plenty on hand in case anything happens (like if your team gets winning by 2 goals).
The linesman replaces the pucks at each face-off and every two minutes. He does this by throwing a new one onto the ice for them to use, which they will usually do after taking their first shot or pass from that point in time until another player takes over possession of it again while skating towards an empty net position near goal line extended out wide past the blue line with ample space all around him so no opponent can cut off any possible path into inner circle area.
Does the temperature of a hockey puck affect how far it will travel?
While both pucks will travel the same distance across the ice, a warmer puck can bounce further and cover more of it with equal force.
